Daynote - Wed 29 Jul

It's July (nearly August) allegedly, though visually it looks more like September or October out on the foreshore. Grey skies and damp. Though it is still pretty warm and humid. Nice walk this morning, though I can't describe the air as 'fresh'.

ON DECK: I nearly didn't get out, because writing this morning was slooooow and I was tempted to keep going. But sometimes you have to walk away. I got 401 words, which isn't nothing. But is significantly less than I feel good about. Ah well. I have a week off (from the dayjob) coming up and I'd planned to keep writing through that week, but I don't think I will. I need as-close-to-zero screentime as I can manage, and that means writing too.

LISTENING: I really enjoyed this SFFAddicts episode about the challenges and opportunities of crowdfunding, special editions and high-end indie publishing. I have close-to-zero interest in ever doing it myself, but I do find the economics and marketing and everything about indie publishing to be absolutely fascinating. And some of the folk I've met in that world are absolute grafters who are reaping the rewards of it.

WATCHING: A couple of episodes of RICK AND MORTY last night (I went for a long run, then made dinner, then wanted to watch something stupid). Reliably daft.

READING: A bit more of GHOST NOTES by Doug Johnstone (Bookshop, Waterstones, Amazon) last night. I will need to put my questions together for Doug (I'm interviewing him next week) so I'll have this finished in the next couple of days. Greatly enjoying it.

LINK: I'm a pretty hardcore Mac person and have been for the better part of twenty years, but I flirt with the idea of switching to Linux now and again (especially with the huge number of really nice, modern distros available now) and machines like the modular Framework Pro 13 definitely give me pause. That's a nice laptop, and it's upgradeable! Maybe one day, if I can get it to run Scrivener.

UP NEXT: A couple more days of writing, then a week off with a nice event in the middle of it. Deeply looking forward to it. Hitting 60k is looking somewhat possible but I need to write more than 400 words tomorrow to do it. We'll see.
