Daynote - Wed 19 Nov
A very good day indeed.
I had quite a day yesterday. A day so good I couldn't really get to sleep and when I woke up this morning, having not really slept enough, I chuckled quietly in the darkness as I remembered everything and murmured 'fuck yeah'. I normally dislike Tuesdays as a general rule. But yesterday was a definite exception.
Unfortunately I can't tell you about any of it. But I will, as soon as I can. Sorry, I know vagueposting is annoying. Still, the weather is gorgeous (but cold) and the work is going well.
ON DECK: 263 words on the outline this morning as well as a bunch of admin and 400 separate words for A Thing I can't tell you about, but which was very satisfying to write.
And today I have a very exciting meeting. Which I also can't tell you about (yet), but which I think is going to be a game-changer.
And I'm prepping to go to Glasgow tomorrow to speak to three fellow crime and thriller writers as part of Scottish Book Week. Really looking forward to visiting Ibrox Library!
LISTENING: Really enjoyed this interview with Jennie Godfrey and Abigail Dean on CrimeTime FM - the discussion about second books and working in the industry as a bookseller were particularly interesting.
WATCHING: A bit of TREASURES OF THE WORLD last night, which is excellent chill telly, but I also really enjoyed this video essay about visual complexity and tactility in filmmaking.
READING: More of all three of my beta reads yesterday, plus a bit of THE POWER OF THE DOG at the end of the day. It has incredibly long chapters, but they're composed of very short scenes that zip all over the place and mix narrative distances, perspectives and tones, so it somehow manages to feel pacy while also having an average chapter length of 10k+ words. Fantastic stuff.
LINK: Sam J. Miller wrote an excellent piece on the odd tendency to discount good things when you're working in publishing. He's very right - it's a constant and conscious battle to look back and appreciate just how far you've come.
UP NEXT: More outlining, off to Glasgow tomorrow and then... more outlining! But I'm having fun with it and enjoying the crackle of new ideas and figuring out where this new book (PROJECT VAULT) is going.
Onward!
